Why the site is not called Wealden
“Wealden” was coined in 1974 from the Weald, the old woodland landscape that covers this part of Sussex. It is a real landscape and a real council, but it is not a place anybody gives as their address. So we name the towns: Crowborough, Uckfield, Hailsham, Heathfield and Polegate, and the villages with them, Forest Row, Buxted, Hartfield, Mayfield, Wadhurst, Herstmonceux, Hellingly, Isfield, Alfriston, Willingdon and Pevensey. The northern half of the district commutes towards London and Tunbridge Wells and the southern half faces Eastbourne, and that difference runs through most local arguments here.
What we report
Wealden District Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Uck, the upper Medway and the Cuckmere, and company filings in The Gazette. East Sussex County Council runs roads, schools and social care rather than the district, and we say which body a decision belongs to. Every fact carries a link to its source.
The 2028 change
Wealden District Council is due to be abolished in April 2028, when East Sussex outside Brighton is to be reorganised into a single unitary authority. That will change who is responsible for planning, bins and council tax across this district. We will report the process from the published documents and keep our reference pages pointing at whichever body actually answers on the day you read them.
