A points failure has cut the Uckfield line to one train every two hours until Saturday 19 September. Delays reach 45 minutes; buses call at Crowborough.

Crowborough has been down to one train every two hours for four days, and Southern expects it to stay that way for six more. A points failure on the Uckfield line has cut the service to roughly one train every two hours in each direction between London Bridge and Uckfield, with trains that do run delayed by up to 45 minutes.

Southern says this is expected to last until the end of the day on Saturday 19 September.

The normal weekday service from Crowborough is hourly, leaving at 44 minutes past the hour, with hourly returns from London Bridge at 7 minutes past. That is set out on our Crowborough train times page. The fault has halved it.

What Southern says went wrong

National Rail’s incident record shows the problem was reported at 05:05 on Wednesday 9 September and last updated at 01:40 on Sunday 13 September. The route affected is given as between Uckfield and East Croydon or London Bridge.

Southern’s own wording is that “an operational incident on the railway in the Ashurst area has caused a points failure, significantly disrupting service on this route”. Further down the same notice it says the failure is “in the Hurst Green area”. Those are two different places, about seven miles apart on the same branch, and Southern does not reconcile them. We have reported both rather than choosing one.

Points are the moveable sections of track that send trains onto different routes at a junction. Southern says that with severe failures like this one “the route is blocked entirely”, and that Network Rail has sent its specialist signalling and telecoms teams to site as a priority.

Trains that do get through take up to 15 minutes longer than usual through the Ashurst area, on top of the delays.

The replacement buses, and the two that matter in Crowborough

Rail replacement buses are running between Uckfield and Oxted. Southern publishes them as repeating hourly times:

  • xx:33 from Uckfield to Edenbridge Town
  • xx:54 from Edenbridge Town to Oxted
  • xx:36 from Oxted to Crowborough
  • xx:57 from Crowborough to Uckfield

Crowborough is named in two of the four, so the bus is a real option from the town rather than something you have to reach Uckfield to use. Southern advises allowing at least 30 minutes more than usual for a journey by replacement bus.

If you are travelling on a day when the direct service does not suit, Southern’s advice is to take a Southern train between London Victoria and East Grinstead and change at Hurst Green for a connecting replacement bus to Uckfield.

Where your existing ticket is accepted

At no extra cost, on:

  • Southeastern services between Tunbridge Wells and London
  • alternate Southern and Thameslink services between East Grinstead, Lewes, Haywards Heath or Three Bridges and London
  • Thameslink services between Haywards Heath or Three Bridges and London
  • Brighton & Hove bus routes 29, 29B and 29X between Brighton, Lewes, Uckfield and Tunbridge Wells

Southeastern from Tunbridge Wells is the one worth knowing about from Crowborough, because the A26 runs straight there and the line into Charing Cross and Cannon Street is unaffected.

One more detail for anyone who drives to the far end: Oxted car park is closed. Oxted parking season tickets are being accepted at Caterham and East Grinstead instead.

Saturday is the only clear day

The reduced service is due to finish at the end of Saturday 19 September. The line does not then return to normal for long.

  • Sunday 20 September: buses replace trains between East Croydon and Oxted before 09:00, with an amended train service between Oxted and East Grinstead or Uckfield. National Rail record.
  • Monday 21 to Friday 25 September: from about 23:30 on Monday to Thursday evenings until the end of service, buses replace trains between East Croydon and Oxted or East Grinstead. An additional bus runs from Crowborough to Uckfield. National Rail record.

So the one day in the next fortnight with neither a fault nor engineering work on this stretch is Saturday 19 September itself.

What we could not confirm

On 9 September we reported that Southern had extended the temporary Uckfield line timetable to at least 5 October, because of heat-related speed restrictions on the track. That notice is no longer on Southern’s service updates page. The only Uckfield line entry there today is this points failure, and the only speed restriction listed is a separate one between Ore or Eastbourne and London Victoria, starting Monday 14 September for about four weeks.

Southern has not published anything saying the Uckfield speed restriction has been lifted. It may simply have been folded into the incident notice. Until Southern says either way, treat the position after 19 September as unsettled.

Southern also said on Sunday that journey planners for Monday 14 September were still being updated, so a time you look up early in the day may change.

What it means for you

  • Check every journey on the day, not the night before. Southern was still rebuilding Monday’s journey planner on Sunday.
  • The 2-hourly service is the plan, not the floor. Trains that run are also subject to delays of up to 45 minutes, so allow the extra 45 minutes Southern asks for.
  • For London, Tunbridge Wells is the reliable fallback. Your ticket is accepted on Southeastern from there, and that line is not affected.
  • If you use the bus, leave 30 minutes earlier than you would for the train, and note that two of the four published bus workings start or finish at Crowborough.
  • Do not set out for Oxted by car. The car park there is closed; Caterham and East Grinstead are taking Oxted parking season tickets.
  • Claim for delays. Southern’s Delay Repay applies. Keep the ticket and note the journey.
